3 US hospital workers gunned down in Yemen

JIBLA (Yemen) — A suspected extremist shot dead three American missionary hospital workers and badly wounded a fourth yesterday in the first major anti-US attack in Yemen since the sinking of the USS Cole in 2000.

The US-based Southern Baptist Convention’s International Mission Board said hospital administrator
William Koehn, purchasing agent Kathleen Gariety and doctor Martha Myers were killed in the attack in this town.

Pharmacist Donald Caswell was taken to hospital to have two bullets removed and was expected to recover from his injuries, the board said.

The gunman opened fire with a Kalashnikov assault rifle on a routine morning medical meeting in the Jibla Baptist hospital in the province of Ibb, 105 miles south of the capital Sanaa, according to Yemeni officials.

The killer, who was arrested on the spot, had entered the building saying he was visiting a sick relative, they said.

Police sources said the man, identified as 32-year-old Ali Abdulrazzak Al Kamel from Damar province, had a fake bandage on his hand as if requiring treatment.

He went into an administrative block, pulled out the rifle and gunned down three of the staffers.

The fourth fled into the hospital pharmacy but was followed and also shot.

“We are devastated by this news,” board spokesman Larry Cox said in a statement released by the Baptist church press.

“We are moving quickly to minister to family members located in Yemen as well as in the United States.”

The group has not decided whether to relocate other US workers connected with the hospital, Cox said.

Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh, in a message of condolence to US counterpart George W. Bush, vowed that the “the authors of this hateful crime will not escape punishment and will be punished by justice so they can serve as examples to others.

“We are deeply shocked by this regrettable incident in which three American doctors were killed by an extremist while doing their job for the Yemeni people,” Saleh said in the message carried by the official Saba news agency.

In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil men and imposters will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.
(2 Tim 3:12)

Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
(Matthew 5:10)

Remember the words I spoke to you: If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the One who sent me.
(John 15:20, 21)
